Matthew 5: 9 – Who are the peacemakers?

138

Except Matthew 5: 9 in the New Testament nowhere else the noun “peacemaker” is not found; and the verb “to make peace” occurs in Colossians 1: 20 where it is said that Christ made peace by the blood of his Cross. Besides this, in Ephesians 2: 15 too the verb is used, but in a slightly different way. The context of both Colossians 1: 20 and Ephesians 2: 15 (Cf. Col 1: 13-23; Eph 2: 11-22) describe Jesus’ work of redemption in terms of reconciling conflicts and ending hostility. Jesus is the first peacemaker. The author of the Letter to the Ephesians explicitly states: “He is our peace, who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility” (Eph 2: 14).
