Accepting Responsibility

One cold day a trembling old man was brought into the court. He was accused of stealing a loaf of bread. When questioned, the man explained to the Judge that he resorted to the crime because his family was starving.

“The law demands that you be punished,” declared the Judge. “I have to fine you Rs. 51.” At the same time he reached into his pocket and said, “Well, here’s your money to pay your fine. And now I remit the fine.”

“Furthermore,” went on the Judge, “I am going to fine everybody  in the courtroom 50 paisa for living in a town where a man has to steal bread in order to survive.” A tray was passed around and the astonished old man left the courtroom with at least Rs. 80 in his pocket.

Stop all this evil that I see you doing … see that justice is done. Help those who are oppressed – Is 1:16-17.

Ask for the grace to accept the commandment of love laid down by Christ.
