The narrative of the birth of Jesus has three parts:
- The general background and circumstances of the birth (Lk 2:1-5);
- The birth (Lk 2:6-7); and
- The manifestation of the child and the various reactions (Lk 2:8-20).
The third part containing the angelic annunciation to the shepherds and their reaction is the focus of the narrative. For the angelic message interprets the events of Jesus’ birth for the shepherds.
