Octave of Christmas (31st December, 2018)
First Reading: 1 Jn 2:18-21 (Anointing from Holy One)
Gospel: Jn 1:1-18 (The Word became flesh)
Now that we are at the last day of the year 2018, our hearts would surely go back to all the events of the past days of this year to end. The events could be sad or happy. The events could be social or pastoral or those related to family even. In this last day, St. John invites us to direct our mind and thought on the aspect our companionship with God. As this year is fast coming to end, let us reflect and see how we can enjoy the presence of God with us?
St. John begins the Gospel with saying, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (1:1-3). These verses bring about two realities. The first is that God’s presence is everywhere through His word and everything in the world owes its existence to Him. This is important for our today’s reflection. Unfortunately, these days of phenomenon of evil, the world seems to be full of more negative than positive. All these at times drive us to a conception that the world is bad. This convulsion raises another question in our life. If the world is so bad, how one would say there is nothing?
The Bible describes God as Holy, righteous, just, kind, mercy and soon. We have also references to concrete facts of His mercy upon His people. It also means that God cannot permit evil. He only annihilates them from the root. If so, how does the evil happening in our life.
In this connection we should remind ourselves of the creation of the universe by God. God created the world and all in it and told Adam and Eve, “God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it (Jn 1:28). This goes to saying that he endowed the human with the ability to choose good or evil. This also entails that he allied them to respond to His love and trust Him to choose to disobedience.
So, God having given us the freedom to choose god and the responsibility comes on God alone. It is the human persons who not only defies himself by his thought, word and action but he also comes to spread the evil consequence on others. One man’s evil has evil consequence on others as Adam and Evils’ upon the whole humanity. But God in His love and concern sent His own Son to save the humanity for eternal devastation. He was with humility though God’s Word and showed it how to walk in His light and God by living the word of God. So, the humanity is obstinate or stubborn to walk in his light. It receives the world of God who is God with us. God offers as Christ to do good and avoid evil but if humbly which goes away from him. Now at the last days of this year, it is good to ask ourselves how much we have been with Christ? How much I have been imbibed with his words to make my life full of goodness, happiness and joy. Amen.
