Christmas Tide (4th January, 2019)
First Reading: 1 Jn 3:7-10
Gospel: Jn 1:35-42
As Jesus was passing by, John the Baptist stared at Jesus and proclaimed “look this is the Lamb of God “and immediately, two of the disciples of John, followed Jesus and stayed with him for the rest of the day.
One of the disciples was Andrew the brother of Simon Peter. The next morning, Andrew explained what he had seen to his brother and declared “we have found the Messiah the Christ.”
Andrew took Simon to Jesus and instantaneously Jesus was able to identify Simon Peter. Then Jesus declared “Simon, son of John, you are to be called Cephas…” meaning ‘rock.’
We all know, that announcement became the truth and Simon Peter becomes the rock on which Jesus built his Church. He was the first pope nominated by Jesus. The tradition still continues till today through our beloved Pope Francis.
Here, John the Baptist had the role of the one to lead the way for Jesus, declare and testify that he is the -Lamb of God – and indirectly responsible for the first nomination of the Pope.
There are instances and opportunities that come in our lives too, where we can testify Jesus as a lamb of God and provide disciples to Jesus by showing our true faith in him.
In fact, we are accountable in bringing more people closer to Jesus. Let’s take that one step, that important step ahead today, and do it. Amen.
