Once again, we have a passage that is not thematically related to the preceding, but combined by Luke and placed in the travel narrative. Verses 58-59 have a parallel in Mt 5: 25-26, as a part of the sermon on the mount.
Jesus challenges his listeners to undertake timely reconciliation with one’s opponents. Jesus warns them to first ‘judge for themselves’. For the consequence of being dragged into court are serious. Such legal conflict must be avoided by having recourse to reconciliatory measures.
As these sayings appear here, they may be seen simply as an advice given by Jesus on prudent ways with one’s opponent, the context of which is lost to us.
